What is Stimming?
Stimming, short for self-stimulatory behavior, involves repetitive movements or sounds that help regulate sensory input and emotional states. For autistic individuals, stimming is essential. It serves as a coping mechanism to process the overwhelming amount of sensory information they receive. Unlike neurotypical individuals, autistic people experience a heightened sensory environment, making stimming a vital tool for self-regulation. In this blog, I will delve into the significance of stimming, the misconceptions surrounding it, and the importance of creating supportive environments for autistic individuals.
The Role of Stimming in Self-Regulation
Stimming plays a crucial role in self-regulation for autistic individuals. It is a natural response to manage sensory overload and emotional stress. For instance, my friend used to stim by rocking back and forth while talking. This repetitive motion helped her organize her thoughts and communicate effectively. Her parents and environment never discouraged her from stimming, allowing her to thrive. Today, she is in college, a member of a band, and living her autistic life with the support she needs.
The calming effect of stimming on the nervous system cannot be overstated. Everyone fidgets or stims to some extent, but for autistic individuals, it is a more pronounced need due to their neurological sensory system. Their system takes in more information than that of non-autistic individuals, making stimming a crucial part of their self-regulation toolkit.
Unfortunately, many misconceptions persist about stimming, especially in educational and therapeutic settings. For instance, an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or occupational therapy goal might emphasize self-regulation, but the interpretation often leans towards expecting the child to sit still and be quiet. This misunderstanding of self-regulation can be detrimental. True self-regulation involves recognizing what one needs to manage their sensory system and accessing those resources. It is not about being still and quiet but about seeking out and using self-regulatory tools effectively.

Misconceptions and Realities of Stimming
One common misconception is that stimming is a behavior that needs to be eliminated or reduced. However, stimming is a natural and necessary part of an autistic person’s life. It helps them manage their sensory experiences and emotions. For example, if I am in a room and feel cold, I might put on a jacket or rub my arms to warm up. This is a form of self-regulation. Similarly, when an autistic individual stims, they are regulating their sensory system to function better in their environment.
In educational settings, this misunderstanding can lead to inappropriate goals and interventions. A goal might state that a child should self-regulate, but the underlying expectation is for them to sit still and be quiet. This is not true self-regulation. True self-regulation involves the individual deciding what they need to manage their sensory input and accessing that resource. For instance, if a child needs to cover their ears to reduce auditory overload, they should be allowed to do so.
To illustrate this, I often refer to a video featuring Chris, an autistic individual who communicates using a board. Chris explains that he stims to regulate his disordered sensory system. When asked why he likes to cover his ears, he communicated that it reduces environmental overload and makes sounds softer. This insight is invaluable in understanding the necessity of stimming for autistic individuals. It is not a sign of non-compliance or distraction but a critical self-regulatory practice.

The Importance of Acceptance and Support
Creating supportive environments for stimming is essential for the well-being of autistic individuals. Acceptance of stimming can lead to more inclusive and accommodating spaces. For example, in my classroom, I use colored tape to designate areas for different types of stimming. There might be a space for pacing, spinning, or other movements that help students regulate their sensory input. This approach not only acknowledges the importance of stimming but also provides a structured way for students to access what they need without disrupting others.
It is crucial to distinguish between advocating for self-regulation and actual self-regulation. Advocating for self-regulation involves understanding and supporting the individual’s needs, while self-regulation itself is the process of recognizing and accessing the necessary tools to manage sensory input. For autistic individuals, this often means stimming in various forms—whether it’s flapping hands, rocking, or vocal stimming.
Vocal stimming, in particular, can be challenging to manage in shared environments because it can be disruptive. However, understanding its purpose is key. Vocal stimming can serve multiple functions, such as blocking out overwhelming noises or providing rhythmic feedback similar to rocking. In my experience, creating designated spaces where students can engage in vocal stimming without disturbing others is effective. For instance, one of my students had a tent where he could verbally stim without disrupting the class.
Real-Life Examples of Stimming
To further illustrate the importance of stimming, let’s look at a few real-life examples. Lauren, an autistic individual, was told as a child to stop stimming because it was deemed inappropriate. As an adult, she recognizes that stimming was her way of self-regulating. Suppressing her stimming led to internalized feelings of not trusting her own body. Now, she advocates for the acceptance of stimming as a natural and necessary behavior.
Another example is Chris, who explained that on days when he needs to stim more, it is challenging for him to focus on tasks. This insight highlights the importance of allowing stimming rather than suppressing it. When Chris is allowed to stim, he can manage his sensory input and engage more effectively in activities.
In a classroom setting, understanding and accommodating stimming can lead to better outcomes for autistic students. For instance, one of my students used to verbally stim by repeating lines from a YouTube video. To accommodate this, we scheduled time for him to engage in verbal stimming in a designated area. This approach allowed him to regulate his sensory input without disrupting the class.
Addressing Common Concerns
Parents and educators often have questions about how to handle stimming, especially when it seems disruptive or constant. Here are some common concerns and suggestions for addressing them:
1. Verbal Stimming:
Verbal stimming can be managed by creating designated spaces where the individual can engage in vocal stimming without disturbing others. For instance, using a tent or a separate room can provide a safe space for verbal stimming.
2. Stimming as Task Avoidance:
If an autistic individual starts stimming when asked to complete a task, it is essential to understand the underlying reasons. They might need more time to regulate before they can engage in the task. Allowing them a few minutes to stim can help them focus better once they are regulated.
3. Balancing Sensory Needs:
In households with multiple neurodivergent individuals, stimming needs might conflict. Creating separate spaces for different types of stimming and using tools like headphones can help balance sensory needs. Understanding each individual’s sensory profile and planning accordingly can lead to a harmonious environment.
4. Stimming in School:
If a child does not have a safe space to stim at school, it is essential to advocate for accommodations. Working with the school to create sensory-friendly areas, using tools like colored tape to designate spaces, and allowing sensory breaks can make a significant difference.
The Path Forward
Acceptance of stimming is not just about allowing movements or sounds; it is about recognizing the fundamental way autistic individuals process the world. Embracing stimming leads to more inclusive environments, better self-regulation, and overall well-being for autistic individuals.
In my advocacy work, I have seen the positive impact of acceptance and support. Autistic individuals like Chris and Lauren demonstrate that when they are allowed to stim freely, they can thrive and communicate more effectively. By creating environments that support stimming, we can help autistic individuals lead fulfilling lives.
