The Upper Peninsula Autism Network celebrated its 15th year by collaborating with Statewide Autism Resources & Training (START). (This is news from December 2016.)
To mark the occasion, the organization presented a Leadership Award recognizing leaders in the field, and the award went to Woodland Elementary School.
The school is known for its best practice and for leading by example.
Woodland Elementary School has also worked with Dickinson-Iron ISD (its regional education service agency) to build a school community that promotes acceptance and inclusion, and to support autistic students to learn and thrive at their own level.
Over the previous decade and a half, START had provided carefully designed, intensive training programs for many teaching staff across Dickinson-Iron ISD.
The program is an eight-day, instructor-led training for both teaching and non-teaching staff, including consultants, teachers, educational assistants and administrators.
Over the eight days, the training covers:
- An overview of autism
- Proactive behavior supports
- Educational strategies and services
- IEP (Individualized Education Program) development and implementation
I am Ash and I celebrate Neurodiversity! Growing up with an elder brother with severe Autism was tough – but it has also taught me essential life lessons. I don’t believe that people with Autism are necessarily or have any disorder (except in extreme cases). They are just different! And that is something to be proud of! I am passionate about helping other families who may have Autism conditions in their family. So please reach out and drop me a note. I will be glad to help 🙂
