What is a Social Story: Take a Bath?

The Take a Bath Social Story is a visual aid that uses images and words to help a learner easily understand about taking a bath. Think of it as a visual preview for the learner of what to expect and what to do when taking a bath.

Some learners struggle with taking a bath. It may cause anxiety for them or they may not understand why they have to take a bath or what steps they must take to complete the bath taking task. Seeing visual cues presented in a short and simple story, can help the learner absorb the information more easily than just being told verbally.

The goal of the Take a Bath Social Story is to improve the learner’s understanding of taking a bath. It is also used to help reduce any anxiety the learner has by preparing them with what happens when they take a bath.

Another goal is to develop the self-care skill of the learner being able to take a bath independently. A benefit of having it read like a story, is it allows the carer to read the social story as often as wanted and with inflection to make it more interesting to the learner.
