What is a Frequency Data Sheet?

A Frequency Data Sheet is a data collection method that involves counting and recording the number of times a behavior occurs during the time observed. There is no specification as to the length of time a behavior is observed.

A Frequency Data Sheet is helpful in establishing a baseline for a target behavior, creating behavior goals, creating intervention/treatment plans, or for monitoring & tracking progress on a target behavior.

Remember, this data sheet is used when the behavior can easily be counted and the behavior has a clear beginning and end. Example: how many times a learner bangs their head on the floor (Learner banged his head on the floor 8 times), gets out of their seat at dinner (Learner got out of their seat 7 times during dinner), or how many times a learner has a toileting accident (Learner had 3 toileting accidents today).

The goal of the Frequency Data Sheet is to record the number of times a learner’s target behavior is occurring. Recording how frequently a behavior is occurring is beneficial to the support team in deter-mining how problematic the target behavior is and in deciding on the best course of action to help with that behavior. This data can be used when creating an intervention strategy.
