I have been teaching in a Special Day class for years, but sometimes I run into a mental block for how to best teach. I have a class with mixed needs, but most are lower functioning in skills and learning abilities.
About half of my class is on the spectrum for Autism. They are students I sometimes struggle with the most because they are each so unique in their needs.
They each have different levels of behaviors and learning abilities, too. I am not sure how to help each of them all the time.
I try to stay on top of research and learn new ways to teach the basic skills I need to in my class. I love my students and I want them to learn.
I like to mix up my ways of teaching and include different modalities. I’m always open to new ideas when it comes to teaching children with Autism.
Do you have any ideas you can share with me for teaching at different levels in an appropriate way for those with Autism?
I am Ash and I celebrate Neurodiversity! Growing up with an elder brother with severe Autism was tough – but it has also taught me essential life lessons. I don’t believe that people with Autism are necessarily or have any disorder (except in extreme cases). They are just different! And that is something to be proud of!
