ADHD is developed in childhood and can happen to anyone; however, genes have a definite role to play. Five to 11 percent of kids are diagnosed with ADHD and a significant proportion of those diagnosed are girls.
Although some of these girls are successful in outgrowing ADHD, many of them transition into adulthood with ADHD. On the other hand, some say many girls do not receive a diagnosis because they do not exhibit the symptoms.
A recent research study shows that Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Syndrome can be different in females than their male counterparts, and that there are three different types of ADHD, namely:
- Inattentive
- Hyperactive Impulse
- Combined Inattentive
The inattentive type is found to be more common in females, although it does not always catch the attention of parents and teachers.
So how do we know if someone has Inattentive ADHD? Some of the symptoms are as follows:
- Having trouble staying focused
- Being disorganized and frequently forgetful
- Committing mistakes regularly at regular tasks
ADHD, whether in girls or boys, troubles both the groups; however, girls are less likely to get into trouble and often they are mistaken for being day-dreamers. Nevertheless, they have difficulty with socializing.
Although being diagnosed on the spectrum makes it more difficult to stay on the job and handle day-to-day stress, women with ADHD also struggle with their regular tasks, such as managing finances or completing household chores.
It has also been observed that girls sometimes end up blaming themselves when they are unable to get things done. Further, ADHD makes it hard to read cues from other individuals, making young women feel insecure.
This is also one of the reasons why girls end up having depression, eating disorders, and/or anxiety.

So how does one get back on track?
The first step is to not ignore the problem and get a timely diagnosis. This helps in determining the right treatment for the condition. Behavioral therapies as well as medications can also help manage ADHD.
If you see any of the above signs, schedule an appointment with your physician and talk about the presence of symptoms.
Teachers do not suggest evaluations for girls as frequently as for boys. If a teacher suggests that your daughter needs an evaluation, take her to a doctor immediately.

I am Ash and I celebrate Neurodiversity! Growing up with an elder brother with severe Autism was tough – but it has also taught me essential life lessons. I don’t believe that people with Autism are necessarily or have any disorder (except in extreme cases). They are just different! And that is something to be proud of! I am passionate about helping other families who may have Autism conditions in their family. So please reach out and drop me a note. I will be glad to help 🙂
